Davison Igbinosun grew up in Union Township, New Jersey, and attended Union High School. In his high school career, he was a dual-threat player, rushing for 894 yards and 11 touchdowns on 75 carries, and hauled in 25 passes for 492 yards and three touchdowns. However, he was even better on defense, tallying 211 tackles, six going for a loss, seven interceptions, 19 pass deflections, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and a blocked field goal. The four-star recruit committed to play football at Ole Miss over other schools such as Notre Dame, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Indiana, Virginia, Wake Forest, Duke, and Pitt. His brother Desmond plays college football for Rutgers.
As a freshman, Igbinosun played in 13 games, starting in 10, and collecting 37 tackles and five pass deflections. For his performance in the year, he was named a Freshman All-American by College Football News. After the season, he decided to enter the transfer portal and ultimately decided to transfer to Ohio State. He stepped in at Ohio State and started all 13 games in 2023. He ranked third on the team in tackles with 59 and also had five pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. He was named Honorable mention all-Big Ten Conference.
Strengths
At 6-foot-2 with long limbs, Igbinosun uses his length to keep receivers in his reach and does an excellent job of breaking up passes that at first glance appear to be an easy completion. Against the run, he does a good job of stacking up and taking on receivers and then laying a hit on a ball carrier. His length also comes into play during press coverage, and he does an effective job of knocking receivers off their routes, screwing up the timing of plays. Igbinosun has a combination of long speed to go with fluid agility, giving him the ability to mirror receivers.
Weaknesses
Igbinosun struggles when the ball is in the air and can be late turning his head around to the football. Although he breaks up his share of passes, he misses out on interceptions by being a second late with his reaction.
Igbinosun can be beaten by double moves and pump fakes and will need to tame his aggressiveness at the next level. He can be stiff in his change of direction and can lose a step from time to time, which tends to happen later in games and may just be a stamina issue that can be fixed.
Conclusion
Former first-round pick A.J. Terrell is a good NFL comparison to how Igbinosun could perform. Terrell has a bit more playmaking ability but both players use their length to their advantage. Igbinosun's overall ceiling may not be as high but he should be a solid NFL starter.
There is not much difference between Igbinosun and the top cornerbacks in the class. Draft Nation has Igbinosun as a third-round pick with the potential to improve his stock this season and at the combine. The one downside of Igbinosun is his lack of playmaking ability compared to the top prospects. He should not go lower than day two and could go as high as a late first-round pick.
