The University of Pittsburgh’s Rasheem Biles continues to prove to be a versatile asset, offering positional flexibility at the NFL level. These types of players are more and more sought after every year, and although Biles may not be a first or even second day target, his utility will garner the attention of most teams on day three.
Biles measures in at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, allowing him to play a variety of defensive positions. Technically, he’s a linebacker, but with his speed and blitzing abilities, teams will find him lining up at safety and even edge rusher in the college game.
Biles is an excellent athlete. In high school, he played running back, receiver, and defensive back. While at Pitt, his athleticism has allowed him to roam sideline to sideline, blitz effectively, and excel in pass coverage.
Strengths
A Swiss Army Knife may be the best way to describe Biles. He lives through his speed, and his instinct to get to the ball allows him to excel, whether in the run game or the passing game. He’s a solid tackler, excellent blitzer and can fall back into multiple scheme coverages with ease.
He’s a smooth mover, and he flows to the play and the ball carrier nicely. He doesn’t mind and often invites contact, even engaging in physical play against offensive linemen who may outweigh him by 100 pounds. And Biles is a sure-fire special team contributor at the next level with his ability to get to the ball carrier with speed and frequency. He’s a Butkus Award nominee for a reason.
Weaknesses
Biles is a classic “tweener” at the pro level. He’s too small to be a full-time starter at linebacker and maybe too big to play safety, down in and down out. However, he’s likely a situational player in the NFL, entering the game on passing downs for his coverage and blitzing skills. He will need to add some strength to withstand blocks better and disengage from stronger pros.
And while Biles can cover, he’s got to refine his coverage skills as he will be asked to cover backs in the flat or bigger, faster tight ends down the seam.
Conclusion
Rasheem Biles will be considered by most scouts and scouting services as a developmental prospect, targeted for a mid-third-day selection. His athleticism and positional flexibility will get him drafted, but it is up to him to translate his impressive college game to the NFL. His impressive stats and omnipresence on film and on the field will make him a valuable depth piece at the next level.
