Explosive Bulldogs Receiver Excels With Vertical Speed and Versatility

Mississippi State wide receiver Anthony Evans has the kind of speed that demands attention from a secondary. At 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, Evans is a vertical threat who can stretch coverage, create space for teammates, and turn a routine completion into a substantial gain. His appeal, however, extends beyond straight-line speed.

Toughness After the Catch

In Draft Nation’s evaluation against Oklahoma, Evans showed toughness and balance after the catch. On a third-and-long play, Sooners linebacker Kip Lewis appeared positioned to stop him after a short gain. Evans spun out of the tackle and continued for a first down. The play illustrated his ability to create yardage when a defense appears to have the right call.

Alignment Versatility

Mississippi State also moves Evans around its formation. He can line up outside, work from the slot or go in motion, giving the offense several ways to use his speed. That flexibility should interest NFL coordinators looking for a receiver who can threaten vertically while contributing on designed touches and underneath throws.

Areas of Concern

His size presents the clearest question. Longer, stronger cornerbacks may challenge Evans at the line and disrupt his timing before he can accelerate into a route. His release technique and ability to avoid contact will matter against NFL press coverage, where defenders are better equipped to take away a receiver’s initial advantage.

2026 Production

Through seven games of the 2026 season, Evans has amassed more than 100 receiving yards per game and five touchdowns, with a 12-catch, 166-yard, two-touchdown performance against Alabama. That production, combined with his Oklahoma film, supports his standing as an intriguing draft prospect.

Strengths

  • Vertical Speed: Can get behind the secondary and force defenses to respect the deep ball.

  • Yards After Catch: Shows balance and determination in space, highlighted by a third-down conversion against Oklahoma.

  • Alignment Versatility: Contributes from the boundary, slot, and motion looks.

  • Big-Play Potential: Can turn one missed tackle or coverage mistake into a significant gain.

Weaknesses

  • Size Against Physical Corners: At 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, he may face difficult matchups against longer defenders.

  • Press-Coverage Releases: Must consistently avoid jams that disrupt his route timing.

  • Translation Against NFL Competition: Needs to show his speed and separation skills hold up against more physical coverage.

Conclusion

Anthony Evans brings a clear offensive calling card: speed that changes the way a defense aligns. His ability to create after the catch and move across the formation gives him more potential uses than a conventional deep-ball specialist.

Draft Nation projects Evans in the Day 2 to early Day 3 range. His draft ceiling will depend in part on how well he handles physical coverage and develops his releases. If those areas improve, he has the tools to become a useful explosive-play weapon in an NFL passing attack.
