This year, a new professional football team will make its debut in the 17th season of the Indoor Football League (IFL), and it's bringing a fresh wave of excitement to the sports landscape: the Fishers Freight. According to Fishersfreightfootball.com, “The Fishers Freight will officially kick off and compete in the IFL (Indoor Football League) at the brand-new Fishers Event Center on April 4, 2024. The team will play eight (8) regular season games at home and 16 games total.” Before their home game on April 4th, be sure to check them out on March 29th, when they’ll face the Northern Arizona Wranglers.
Based in Fishers, Indiana, this team promises to shake up the IFL with its high-energy play and strong community roots, marking the beginning of a new chapter in both local sports and indoor football.
The Fishers Freight is set to be a significant addition to the growing world of indoor football. The IFL, which features fast-paced, action-packed games played in arenas with a smaller field size than traditional outdoor football, has seen an influx of new teams in recent years. With the introduction of the Freight, the IFL continues to build its reputation as a premier destination for both seasoned fans and newcomers to the sport.
The creation of a professional football team from the ground up is no small feat, and the management of the Fishers Freight is leaving no stone unturned in building a winning team.
Quarterback Jiya Wright (Northern Illinois University and the University of Louisiana Monroe alum) and Linebacker Tamar Heart (of the University of Olivet) are no strangers to the IFL. Wright previously played for the Sioux Falls Storm, rushing for 316 yards and five touchdowns and throwing for 532 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions (On the Reighl). Tamar Heart was on the Omaha Beef, where he had 45 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 10.5 TFL (Beeffootball.com). Wright and Heart join running back John Gay and defensive tackle Robert Horsey in what is shaping up to be an exciting era in indoor football.
Meanwhile, Dixie Wooten leads with extensive experience in both indoor and outdoor football. He’s coached for the Bay Area Panthers (OC, 2023-24), the Tucson Sugar Skulls (HC/GM, 2021-22), and the Iowa Barnstormers (HC, 2017-19) and played eight seasons in the IFL prior to his coaching career. Wooten reached the playoffs three times while with Iowa and twice with the Sugar Skulls and was named IFL Coach of the Year twice (2017 & 2018). It’s clear Wooten is committed to creating a dynamic, fast-paced team with their eyes on the prize.
