The young receiver has a big year in store

In training camp leading up to the 2023 football season, there was a lot of talk about a freshman receiver who the veterans gushed about. That freshman was Kenny Johnson, and he's poised for a breakout year.

Johnson, a three-star recruit from Dallastown High School in York, PA was considered one of the top receivers in Pennsylvania. His senior season, he compiled more than 1,000 all-purpose yards (800 yards receiving and 250 yards rushing). He was named Pennsylvania Football Writers All-Class 6A. He also played in the Big 33 Football Classic and was named the MVP after catching nine passes for 161 yards and one touchdown.

After each practice, player after player would mention Kenny Johnson when asked who has impressed you the most? Johnson produced so quickly in practice that many believed he could be a big part of the offense in 2023.

Pitt’s offense struggled from the opening snap and the passing game never took off under Frank Cignetti. Johnson played in all 12 games, starting in three at wide receiver but was never used as a focal part in the offense. He finished the season with just 15 catches for 122 yards and one touchdown. He also ran the ball 10 times for 72 yards. Johnson’s biggest contribution to the team was as a return man. He averaged 23.1 yards per kick-off return, including one 100-yards against Virginia Tech. He was named Honorable Mention All-ACC as a return specialist.

2024 is a brand new start, not just for Kenny Johnson but for the Pitt offense. Gone is Frank Cignettii Jr and in is 31-year-old Kade Bell. Bell ran an explosive offense at Western Carolina where they averaged 37.6 points per game. With Coach Bell’s offense promising to be more dynamic and explosive, Johnson feels that he will see the ball a lot more often in 2024.

“I feel that last year when I was in my first year, they just weren’t comfortable with a freshman playing a large role," Johnson said. "I am much more comfortable this season.”

The Pitt Panthers have had their share of great young wide receivers, especially when you talk about Larry Fitzgerald and the season he had in 2003, questionably the best ever by a college wide receiver. Johnson was asked how much he knew about the legendary receiver.

“I mean when you have more tackles than drops in your career, you are special," Johnson said.

Johnson was also asked about the receivers room as a whole.

“Our receivers are able to do a bit of everything," he said. "Our battles with the secondary have been physical battles."

Pitt may not battle for an ACC title but if quarterback Nate Yarnell can adjust to this high paced offense, the Pitt Panthers will be a fun team to watch for sure.

Kenny Johnson is only a true sophomore so he has some time to grow and produce into an NFL caliber wide receiver.
