The Pittsburgh Steelers finalized a three-year, $123 million contract extension for their Pro Bowl edge rusher, T.J. Watt, including $108 million fully guaranteed. The contract represents an NFL non-quarterback record, averaging $41 million per year. Watt exceeds the mark set by rivals Myles Garrett (Cleveland Browns) and Ja’Marr Chase (Cincinnati Bengals) last season. Watt, for the moment, is the highest-paid defender in the league, but many expect Dallas superstar Micah Parsons to surpass Watt down the road.
At 30, Watt remains at the top of his game. He led the league in forced fumbles in 2024 and raised his career sack totals to 108 in only eight seasons. His extension took a bit longer than many expected but will likely keep Watt in Pittsburgh until the end of his career, making him a “one helmet” player, rare in today’s game.
The Steelers appear to be “all in” for the 2025 season, locking in Watt long term while also acquiring standout receiver D.K. Metcalf from Seattle and signing Aaron Rodgers to start at quarterback in perhaps his final season. The recent trade for cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith underscores the urgency GM Omar Khan and Head Coach Mike Tomlin have put on winning now.
Salary Cap Ramifications for 2025
Before the deal, the Steelers held approximately $25.2 million in 2025 cap space, per Spotrac. Watt’s previous contract carried a $30.4 million cap hit in 2025, but his new deal, considering a big signing bonus, was structured to result in a minimal cap hit this year. And to the fans’ delight, it should allow enough cap space for the Steelers to chase a quality WR2 in what remains of free agency.
Roster Strategy
By re-signing Watt, the Steelers retain their best player heading into a pivotal season. Their defense—always blitz-heavy—will keep the spirit of “Blitzburgh” alive and Watt’s leadership in the locker room and splash play ability will remain as hallmarks for the organization.
That said, with significant cap space available to Khan, the team can still make more signings. According to multiple sources, the team will be active in seeking a long-term solution to their WR2 problem.
There are several trade options, along with free agent opportunities, still available to them. Free agent and former Jags and Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis visited the team a few weeks ago, and the Steelers still seem to be trying to deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Last year, it was for Brandon Aiyuk, who eventually signed a long-term deal with the 49ers.
This year, rumors have been swirling about 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings. Jennings may be on the trade block as San Francisco continues their renaissance, and the Steelers reportedly have an interest.
The Steelers have been one of the most active teams in the offseason, and that trend looks to continue in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to Draft Nation for more updates.
