As the NFL offseason progresses, several notable free agents remain unsigned, offering teams opportunities to bolster their rosters. Here's a look at the top five remaining NFL free agents and their potential impact:
1. Aaron Rodgers – Quarterback
The 41-year-old four-time MVP and Super Bowl XLV champion remains a free agent after his release from the New York Jets in March. Rodgers was rumored to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers near or before last month’s draft and was even seen throwing to new Steeler acquisition, D.K. Metcalf.
So, is this a done deal? No, is the short answer.
Rodgers seems to be deciding on retirement versus playing, but if he does decide to lace them up this fall, the Steelers are the odds-on favorite to land his services.
2. Keenan Allen – Wide Receiver
The longtime Charger turned Chicago Bear finds himself on the market and seeking a new team. So, where does he land?
Recent rumors point to a possible reunion with the Chargers, but the New Orleans Saints have also entered the fray. With the retirement of starting quarterback Derek Carr earlier in the week, the Saints are looking to add weapons to support the quarterback who earns their starting job. New head coach Kellen Moore will have his work cut out for him, but adding a big, sure-handed receiver like Allen to the roster will only help.
3. J.K. Dobbins – Running Back
Proving he still has plenty of tread on the tires, veteran RB J.K. Dobbins is seeking a new team after spending a resurgent season in a Chargers uniform. At only 26 years old, Dobbins has missed the better part of several seasons due to injury but showed last year that he’s still got what it takes to be a starter in the NFL.
It is noteworthy that the Chargers did place an unrestricted free agent tender on him, giving them exclusive rights to negotiate with his agent until the start of training camp. Draft Nation expects him to find a different team, but the Chargers are still very alive in the hunt to re-sign him.
4. Asanti Samuel, Jr. - Cornerback
Possibly the most impactful defensive free agent left on the board, Samuel has visited the Saints and Falcons recently. Both teams are certainly doing their due diligence on his health after his neck surgery last season.
Samuel is a scheme fit for both teams and could be a long-term asset for both squads as they look to bolster their defensive backfields.
5. Justin Simmons – Safety
The 30-year-old safety started all 16 games for the Atlanta Falcons last season, recording 62 tackles, two interceptions, and two passes defended. While no longer in his prime, Simmons will remain a reliable force in any defensive backfield.
So, why is he not signed?
Simmons is seeking to sign with a contender. Teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Baltimore Ravens are circling the wagons here, and Simmons would bring a veteran presence and steady hand to any locker room.
Draft Nation is betting on the Eagles, but there are plenty of teams interested.
