Labor Day weekend brings with it many changes. Autumn returns unofficially as the summer winds down, but as most on this sie can attest to, it also means it’s the return of college football. And of course, Draft Nation is here to unwind the weekend’s games and do a deeper dive into the top prospects and how they did in week one.

Here’s Draft Nation’s Top Three Players of the Week:

Dani Dennis-Sutton (Penn State, Edge Rusher/Defensive Line)

Draft Nation had just posted its analysis on Dennis-Sutton earlier in the week and the Penn State standout did not disappoint. In what became a Nittany Lion rout over Nevada, Dennis-Sutton staked his claim for college football’s defensive player of the week. He forced two fumbles, both of which resulted in scores, and also netted five tackles (2.5 for losses), one sack and deflected a pass.

Some will argue that this week was a result of the level of competition he faced, but he can only play who is on the schedule. There may have been more question marks if he didn’t rack up the performance he posted, and scouts will take note that he rose to the occasion and lit up the stat sheet. The season is long with many more completive games to come, but Dennis-Sutton put in work and proved his first-round preseason rankings were on par with his talent level.

Carson Beck (Miami, Quarterback)

This was the one scouts and fans alike were waiting for. Georgia transfer Carson Beck surely delivered by upsetting a highly ranked Notre Dame team. Beck threw well from the pocket, demonstrated accuracy in his passes and cemented himself as the Miami Hurricane’s next great quarterback.

His skills and leadership were never in doubt, but Beck made a move to a better offsensive scheme for himself and didn’t waste time showing scouts what he can do against a very tough Irish defense. Beck threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns in the winning effort, playing against a stingy Irish squad.

Garrett Nussmeier (LSU, Quarterback)

Week one match ups against ranked opponents are alsays tough for quaterbacks and while it took a few quarters for him to get his sea legs back, Garrett Nussmeier delivered ror the Bayou Bengals. Staring down a vaunted Clemson defense, Nussmeier demonstrated grit and poise against one of the best defensive lines in the country. He was accurate and made plays both inside and outside of thre pocket for LSU. Scouts will surely notice his ability to read defenses.
