Will Echoles - Ole Miss Defensive Tackle - 2027 NFL Draft Prospect

Powerful Rebels DT Brings Run-Stuffing Ability to Multiple Defensive Fronts

Ole Miss defensive tackle Will Echoles is a junior with an impressive combination of size, power, and surprising quickness. He’s developed into a disruptive presence along the Rebels' defensive front with his ability to occupy blockers, control the line of scrimmage, and generate pressure from the interior, making him an attractive prospect for NFL teams searching for a potential three-down defensive tackle.

At 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds, Echoles possesses the size and strength necessary to anchor an NFL defensive line. He is particularly effective against the run, where he uses his powerful lower body and strong base to hold his ground against offensive linemen. Echoles is difficult to move off the nose and frequently commands double teams, allowing linebackers behind him to flow toward the football without having to fight through additional blockers.

What separates Echoles from many traditional run-stuffing defensive tackles is his ability to generate pressure up the middle. Despite weighing 310 pounds, he displays impressive initial quickness and can penetrate gaps before offensive linemen establish their blocks. His combination of power and acceleration allows him to collapse the pocket, forcing quarterbacks to move away from their preferred throwing platform.

Echoles also has a knack for getting his hands into passing lanes. When he cannot reach the quarterback, he remains active and looks for opportunities to bat down passes at the line of scrimmage. That awareness gives him another way to affect the passing game beyond sacks and quarterback pressures.

Another impressive aspect of Echoles' game is his durability. For a defensive tackle of his size, he demonstrates excellent conditioning and rarely needs to leave the field. His ability to handle a heavy workload makes him especially valuable to defensive coordinators who prefer keeping their best interior linemen on the field regardless of down or distance.

There are areas that need improvement, however. While Echoles is an effective run defender, his tackling technique remains inconsistent. He can disrupt plays without always finishing them, occasionally allowing ball carriers to escape after initially penetrating the backfield.

His lack of top-end speed is another limitation. Echoles is quick within the tackle box but struggles when asked to pursue plays toward the sidelines. Once a ball carrier gets outside, he doesn't possess the recovery speed to consistently chase down the play.

Perhaps his biggest technical concern is maintaining leverage late in games. Although Echoles demonstrates impressive overall stamina, his pad level tends to rise as fatigue sets in, making him more vulnerable to offensive linemen who can get underneath him. NFL coaches will want him to maintain proper technique throughout an entire game.

Strengths

Run Defense:  Excellent size and power allow Echoles to anchor against the run and hold his ground against double teams.

Interior Pass Rush:  Generates pressure through the middle using quickness, strength, and the ability to penetrate gaps.

Gap Disruption:  Surprisingly quick for a 310-pound defender, allowing him to disrupt blocking schemes before plays develop.

Durability:  Handles a heavy workload and rarely needs to leave the field despite playing a physically demanding position.

Pass Deflections:  Displays excellent awareness and frequently gets his hands into passing lanes to knock down throws.

Weaknesses

Tackling Consistency:  Needs to become more reliable finishing plays after penetrating the backfield.

Limited Lateral Speed:  Struggles to pursue ball carriers outside the tackle box.

Recovery Ability:  Lacks the speed to consistently recover once beaten or redirected away from a play.

Pad Level:  Can begin playing too upright late in games, reducing his leverage against stronger offensive linemen.

Range:  Most effective operating between the tackles rather than chasing plays across the field.

Conclusion

Will Echoles brings a valuable combination of interior strength, gap penetration, durability, and pass-rushing ability to the 2027 NFL Draft class. While his greatest value comes from controlling the line of scrimmage against the run, his ability to generate pressure up the middle makes him more versatile than a traditional nose tackle.

Echoles isn't going to make many plays chasing running backs toward the sidelines, and his tackling technique and pad level will require refinement. However, his ability to occupy multiple blockers while still disrupting the pocket gives him legitimate starting potential in the NFL.

Draft Nation currently views Echoles as a second-round prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft, with the potential to develop into a dependable three-down defensive tackle. His best fit may come in a defense that allows him to attack interior gaps while taking advantage of his strength against the run.

If Echoles improves his tackling and maintains consistent leverage throughout games, he has the tools to become a productive NFL starter. His combination of quickness and power should make him an attractive option for teams looking to strengthen the interior of their defensive line.
