Leonard lettered all four years at Fairhope High School in Alabama. He also lettered in basketball and track and was named AL.Com player of the year twice. In football, he was a consensus 3-star prospect by 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals. In his senior year he passed for 1,900 yards, ran for 500 yards and tossed 25 touchdowns. He selected Duke over several Division one offers.
As a freshman in 2021, Leonard played in 7 games, starting once against Virginia Tech. He finished the season completing 37 of 62 passes for 381 yards and 1 touchdown. Leonard also ran for 173 yards on 47 attempts, and scored 2 rushing touchdowns.
As a sophomore, Leonard started all 13 games and quickly became one of college football’s best dual threat quarterbacks. Leonard threw for 2,967 yards and 20 touchdowns, while only throwing 6 interceptions. He led the Blue Devils in rushing with 699 yards on 124 carries and scored another 13 touchdowns on the ground. He was named honorable mention All-ACC, and was the MVP of Duke’s 30-13 victory over UCF in the 2022 Military Bowl.
In 2023, Leonard was injured for a majority of the season, and in parts of 7 games he only threw for 1,102 yards with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
He entered the transfer portal at the end of the season and elected to play football at Notre Dame.
