In his two seasons at Jackson State, Sanders led the Tigers to a 23-3 record and was 16-0 in SWAC games. Jackson State won back to back SWAC Championships and also made their first two appearances in the Cricket Celebration Bowl, known as the HBCU National Championship Game.
He holds Jackson State records for season passing touchdowns (40), and completions with (344), and is second all time in passing yards with (3,752). His freshman year, he earned the Jerry Rice FCS National Freshman of the Year Award, and he won the SWAC offensive player of the year award as a sophomore. At the end of his sophomore season, he entered the transfer portal to follow his father to Colorado to play for the Buffaloes.
He had some very good numbers in his first season playing FBS football. Sanders threw for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns, while only throwing three interceptions, but failed to lead the Buffs to a bowl berth. After the season he announced he was coming back for another season with the Buffaloes.
