BioAnalysis
Nubin was a four-star prospect and the No. 4 overall prospect in Illinois according to Rivals. He played wide receiver and defensive back at St. Charles North High School and attended the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Combine. He was named the 2018 Courier-News Football Player of the Year after recording 51 tackles, hauling in 42 passes for 549 yards and 9 touchdowns and running for 600 yards and 12 touchdowns. Between his freshman and sophomore seasons, he played in 19 games and totaled 47 tackles and an interception. As a junior in 2021, Nubin started all 13 games and finished 3rd on the team in tackles with 52 while also adding 1 sack and 3 interceptions. In 2022, Nubin started in 11 games and made 55 tackles and added 4 interceptions and a forced fumble. He was named All-Big Ten after the season and decided to come back for a 5th season. This season, he has started 12 games and collected 53 tackles, 1 sack and a career high 5 interceptions for Minnesota. Nubin is a playmaking safety who has excellent ball skills and gets his head turned around to always put himself in the best position to make a play. He has satisfactory straight line speed and the size to lay a hit on a receiver or ball carrier. He has a big tackle radius and does not hesitate to come into the box to lay a hit. He has long reach and uses this efficiently in coverage. Nubin is an energetic player who brings leadership skills to the secondary. He’s able to play man to man and is sufficient playing in zones. He has good football IQ, allowing him to play multiple positions at times in the Golden Gophers' secondary. On the downside, Nubin always looks for the big hit (which may not work at the next level) and does not wrap up as well as he should. Has good straight line speed, but struggles laterally and doesn’t have elite speed to catch backs or receivers. He plays with tight hips at times that lead to slower transitions coming out of his back pedal. Watching the size and playmaking skills of Tyler Nubin, it didn’t take long to be reminded of Grant Delpit, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2020 draft. Delpit was known as a playmaker at LSU who loved to make huge hits.
