Alex Karaban was born in Southborough, Massachusetts. He started high school at Algonquin Regional High, then spent two years at New Hampton school and then finished his high school eligibility at the IMG Academy. He was named New Hampshire Player of the Year for 2020-2021 after averaging 25.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.9 blocks and shooting 60.3 percent overall. He also played for the Expressions Elite on the AAU circuit and averaged 18.4 points per contest. Karaban was a consensus top 50 recruit and committed to UConn during his senior season.
As a redshirt freshman at UConn, he started 38 games and led the team in total minutes played (1,128). He averaged 9.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists per game and shot an impressive .476 overall and .402 from three-point range.
Karaban was once again very strong during his sophomore year. He started all 39 games and averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.
At the end of the season, Karaban announced his intentions of entering the NBA Draft. Eventually, Karaban decided to return to UConn for another season.
