Carter Yakemchuk was born in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. After playing in the AMBHL as an amateur player, he was drafted by the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL in 2021. In this first season for Calgary, he played in 56 games and scored 4 goals and 9 assists. In 2022-2023 he saw his playing time increase and so did his production. He played in 67 games and tallied 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 points. During 2022-2023 he also represented Canada in the WJC-18 games and played in 7 games without scoring a point.
This past season, Yakemchuk was one of only 2 defensemen to score 30 plus goals in a season, the other was Saginaw's Zayne Parekh who is also a highly touted prospect in the 2024 NHL Draft. He finished the season scoring 30 goals and 41 assists in 66 games, while also compiling 120 PIM.
