Kenneth "K.J." Simpson grew up in Panorama City, Los Angeles and attnded Chaminade College Preparatory School. Over his high school career, he averaged 24 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals and 4 blocks while shooting over 68 percent from the field. Simpson was rated a 4-star recruit and initially committed to Arizona. However, after Arizona head coach Sean Miller was fired, Simpson requested and was granted a release from his National Letter of Intent and reopened his recruitment. He ultimately signed to play at Colorado.
Simpson came off the Colorado bench as a freshman and did a fine job as their 6th man. He averaged 7.4 points and 2.7 assists and appeared to be their future staring point guard. As a sophomore, he was named second-team All-Pac-12 after averaging 15.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 3.8 assists.
As a junior, Simpson was named to the first-team All-Pac-12, leading Colorado in scoring with a 19.5 avergae and shooting 48% from three-point range.
