Michael Brandsegg-Nygard was born in Oslo, Norway. Brandsegg-Nygard made his professional debut for Valerenga Ishockey of Norways's ElteHockey Ligaen (EHL) as a 16-year old. He appeared in 8 EHL games in addition to playing at the under-20 level.
The following season, Brandsegg-Nygard turned down a full time EHL role with Valerenga, to join Mora IK, a Swedish hockey club in the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan.
This season, Brandsegg-Nygard once again saw time for both the junior and professional teams. For the Mora IK Jr. team he played in 7 games and tallied 5 goals and 7 assists.
