Tahj Brooks attended Manor High School in Texas, where he rushed for over 4,400 yards and had 65 total touchdowns. He earned first team All-District honors as both a junior and sophomore, and ran for over 1,000 yards in three seasons. He was rated a three-star recruit who chose Texas Tech over Arizona, Arkansas, Boston College, California, Colorado, Duke, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kansas State, Minnesota, Missouri, SMU, TCU, Utah and Vanderbilt.
Brooks made an instant impact for the Red Raiders in the backfield as a true freshman. He appeared in all 10 games, totaling 255 rushing yards and four touchdowns on only 69 carries. He had a breakout sophomore season for Texas Tech and although he missed a four-game stretch during the season, he still appeared in nine games with four starts, and led the team in rushing with 568 yards and seven touchdowns. Brooks finished as the Red Raiders' team leader in rushing yards for a second-consecutive season, after running for 691 yards in 13 games.
In 2023, Brooks put together one of the best seasons by a Red Raider running back in school history. He started in all 13 games and rushed for 1,538 yards and 10 touchdowns. He became just the fifth Red Raider in program history to rush for 1,500 yards.
