2026 NFL Rookie Watch Week 5

Four New Faces Make Their Mark in 2026

For a first-year NFL player, one of the toughest assignments is standing out in practice and preseason games long enough to earn meaningful snaps when the games actually count. Getting on the field is one thing. Making the most of that opportunity is another.

In Week 5, four newcomers did just that, turning their playing time into impressive performances and earning nominations for NFL Rookie of the Week. From an undrafted quarterback stepping into the spotlight to a pair of disruptive defenders and a wideout making plays, here are this week’s candidates.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUARTERBACK JALON DANIELS

The first nominee is Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jalon Daniels. The former Kansas Jayhawk, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent, sparkled in the Pewter Pirates’ 24-16 road victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Daniels completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards, a 76 percent completion rate, one touchdown and a long gain of 64 yards. He averaged 7.6 yards per attempt and added 23 yards on seven carries, averaging 3.3 yards per rush with a long of nine. The result was a 110.2 passer rating. Perhaps the biggest number of all was zero interceptions. The only real negative was one sack. That’s a pretty darn exceptional second professional start for the 23-year-old signal caller.

Daniels is getting this opportunity because starter Baker Mayfield is sidelined with a dislocated thumb. His first appearances included some difficult moments, including three incompletions and an interception during a late-game relief stint against Minnesota. But the 6-foot-1, 219-pound quarterback has responded with encouraging production.

His season passing stats now stand at 38 completions on 55 attempts for 337 yards, a 69.1 percent completion rate, two touchdowns and three interceptions. His longest completion is 64 yards, and he averages 6.1 yards per attempt, has been sacked four times, and owns a 74.6 passer rating. On the ground, he has 16 carries for 87 yards, a 5.4-yard average and a long run of 21 yards.

My sources tell me Mayfield may not be ready until early November at the soonest. A dislocated thumb on a throwing hand is nothing to fool around with, especially when another hit could aggravate it. Whether the Bucs would even consider a pain-killing injection is another question. For now, look for Daniels to remain under center, beginning with Sunday’s home tilt against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

NEW YORK JETS LINEBACKER DAVID BAILEY

The next nominee is New York Jets linebacker David Bailey. The former Texas Tech Red Raider put up some big-time numbers in New York’s 17-12 home victory over the Cleveland Browns.

Bailey contributed seven tackles, including five solo stops and two assists, and added three sacks. A good day at the office for the 23-year-old defender.

Through five games, the 6-foot-3, 251-pound rookie has registered 25 tackles, including 17 solo stops and eight assists, along with five sacks, one forced fumble, one pass defensed and 1.5 stuffs totaling one yard.

That kind of production gets a coaching staff’s attention. Bailey has shown he can get into the backfield and finish plays, and those numbers should justify more snaps on the gridiron as the season moves along.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS DEFENSIVE LINEMAN GRACEN HALTON

The third nominee is San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Gracen Halton. The Oklahoma Sooners alum enjoyed a real coming-out party in the 49ers’ 32-29 comeback road victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Halton finished with three tackles, all of the solo variety, and added a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. The 22-year-old spent a good portion of the afternoon making life miserable in the opposition’s backfield.

After five contests, the 6-foot-2, 293-pound trench warrior has produced 14 tackles, including eight solos and six assists, with one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two stuffs totaling four yards.

Halton is making a case for a larger role in San Francisco’s defensive line rotation. A big man who can disrupt plays behind the line of scrimmage is going to find himself on the field more often.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS WIDE RECEIVER GERMIE BERNARD

The final nominee is Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Germie Bernard. The former Alabama Crimson Tide standout turned in a big-time performance during Pittsburgh’s 34-22 home conquest of the Indianapolis Colts.

Bernard was targeted nine times and reeled in six catches for 80 yards, averaging 13.3 yards per reception. Three of those grabs moved the chains, and his longest gain covered 25 yards. The 6-foot-1 wideout also carried the ball once for four yards. Not a bad afternoon’s work, for sure.

After going without a stat line in the season opener, the 206-pound rookie has collected 13 receptions on 20 targets for 140 yards, an average of 10.8 yards per catch. Six of those receptions have resulted in first downs, with a long of 25 yards. He also has one rush for four yards.

Bernard is beginning to make the most of his opportunities in the Steelers’ passing attack. If he continues to turn targets into first downs, look for his role to grow as Pittsburgh searches for dependable options on offense.
