What Are Vampire Fantasy Football Leagues?

A guy drops out of the league on draft day and the hours are ticking until the season starts.  You’re doomed, right? Not so fast. 

Last year, I started a 12-team Sleeper league with some of my closest friends and family. This was going to be the new league. The one where we talk our s#!t, make shocking trade deals, and break the ice the next time we see each other.

Draft day comes, the Tuesday before Thursday night kickoff, and my cousin Eddie texts me he wants out of the league, just several hours before the draft.

He claimed he was in too many leagues. 

Now?

Why in the actual, profane four-letter word would you do this? 

Can you just draft tonight? And then we’ll find someone to replace you before Week 1? 

Why didn’t you just say no when I asked you weeks ago? 

I exhausted all options.

He said drafting and leaving was a good idea… until he didn’t show up to draft.

No warning. Nothing. His phone was silent on the other end.

The draft happened, and it was an auto-draft nightmare from the 12th slot. You know the thoughts crossing a sensationalized commissioner’s mind.

The league is ruined. 

Nobody will want this team. 

How do we get by this season? 

The 18-man, non-superflex roster took Jayden Daniels in Round 1, a suspended Rashee Rice in Round 5, and rostered only two running backs.

One was Quinshon Judkins, whose 2025 offseason domestic-violence arrest yielded an uncertain NFL suspension leading up to Week 1.

After a panicky discussion, mostly just my panicking, my other cousin Mitch had the unbelievable idea to make the auto-drafted team the vampire of the league.

In a vampire league, if a team loses its matchup to the vampire, the other teams vote which player the vampire steals from the loser’s roster. Winners keep their teams intact.

Unlike my league, a vampire doesn't typically draft a team with the others. It instead builds its roster through post-draft free agency. 

The vampire finished the season 8-6 to make the playoffs. It took Bijan Robinson, Derrick Henry, CeeDee Lamb, Saquon Barkley, De’Von Achane, Tyler Warren, Justin Jefferson, and Kyren Williams from losing teams.

Eliminated teams were cheering for the vampire as the season went on. After all, they did contribute to its success. The vampire ended up losing a first-round shootout to Mitch, who sparked the idea in the first place. 

In similar pre-draft scenarios, commissioners typically either reschedule the draft until they find someone or abolish the league altogether. If your league mates have other drafts throughout the offseason, it’s a nightmare finding a new draft day to accommodate everyone’s availability. 

Having several of the same types of leagues can be monotonous, and fantasy football junkies like me are always looking for ways to evolve from conventional PPR or standard leagues.

The difference between a good and great league is having people who are willing to try new things and adapt to trends and circumstances.

Playing in a vampire league added a whole new dynamic and rooting interest to fantasy football to keep everyone involved from the first to the last week of the season. We realized what a cool way to make the best of a bad situation. 

So, fellow fantasy football nuts, should this relatable conundrum occur at least once this offseason, don’t panic. Try something different. The vampire league just may be the fix to those pre-draft nightmares.
