Mathison attended Homestead High School in Indiana. He had an impressive senior season batting .515 and leading the state in home runs (16) and runs scored (64). He was also second in the state in RBI with 53. He was ranked the 7th overall prospect and the 2nd best outfielder in Indiana by Perfect Game. Following his high school career, he decided to join Indiana University.
As a freshman with the Hoosiers, Mathison played 59 games with 57 starts. He slashed .273/.393/.608 (average, on base %, slugging), driving in 58 RBI with 11 doubles and 19 home runs. He also stole 8 bases. He was named to the All-Big 10 Freshman team and was Freshman All-American via Collegiate Baseball.
Last season as a sophomore, Mathison started 61 games, playing a few at each corner outfield spot, but mostly starting as a DH. He took a step forward at the plate slashing .311/.426/.538 with 49 RBI, 15 doubles, and 10 home runs.
This year is Mathison's junior season. He is expected to play more outfield this year and improve yet again at the plate, solidifying himself as a top 100 prospect for the draft.
