Colston Loveland attended Gooding High School in Gooding, Idaho, where he starred in basketball and football. As a senior, he played tight end and linebacker, catching 62 passes for 968 yards and 14 touchdowns. For his career, Loveland caught 235 passes for 3,141 yards and 35 touchdowns. He was rated a four-star recruit, a top 250 ranked player in the country and the No 1 player in Idaho, winning the 2021 Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year award. He received several Division 1 offers and eventually committed to the University of Michigan.
Loveland played 14 games in his freshman season at Michigan as a backup tight end. He hauled in 16 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
As a sophomore Loveland saw a spike in his playing time and his numbers improved dramatically. In 15 games, Loveland caught 45 passes for 649 yards and four touchdowns. Once again he averaged over 14 yards per catch (14.4) and was used to open up the middle of the field.
