Waldschmidt attended Braden River High School in Florida. He acted as a utility player, playing all three outfield positions, along with 3B, 2B and SS. He was the 11th ranked shortstop in Florida by Perfect Game, and chose to join Charleston Southern following his high school career.
As a freshman with Charleston Southern, Waldschmidt cam in a slashed .310/.485/.559 (average, on base %, slugging). He hit 9 home runs, 5 doubles, and 2 triples, while knocking in 43 RBI in 52 games. He also stole 18 bags and had a team best 1.044 OPS. He made the Big South All-Freshman Team.
Following his freshman year, Waldschmidt transferred to Kentucky. As a sophomore with the Wildcats, he had a slash line of .290/.427/.445, hitting 5 home runs, 14 doubles, and 1 triple. He drove in 37 RBI and stole 17 bases while only being caught twice.
This season is Waldschmidt's junior year, and his second with the Wildcats. He should improve in his second year in the SEC.
