Taylor attended Dutch Fork High School in South Carolina. During his high school career, he earned two All-State Selections as a sophomore and senior, and was named Mr. Baseball in his senior year. He chose to join Clemson and play both baseball and football.
As a freshman, Taylor played just 13 games for the Tigers, slashing .260/.397/.320 (average, on base %, slugging) with a home run and 4 RBI.
Taylor gained more playing time as a sophomore, putting up a stat line of .362/.489/.523, driving in 46 RBI with 5 home runs and 16 doubles in 62 games. He won the team's most improved award for this performance and became one of the leaders of the team.
This year was Taylor's junior season. He aimed to continue his improvement and match his numbers from last year. He played 32 games, starting in left field in each of them. He got off to a slow start at the beginning of the year, but improved steadily, slashing .230/.465/.480 with seven home runs before fracturing his wrist, cutting his season short. He was the team leader in on base percentage, and was able to hit .308 with runners in scoring position before his injury.
