Bru McCoy was a five-star prospect and ranked the No. 2 overall player in the state of California by 247Sports in 2019. While at Mater Dei High School, he put up big time numbers including 1,428 yards on 78 receptions and 18 touchdowns in 2018. He was named USA Today All-USA first team. McCoy decided to stay home and play for the USC Trojans, picking them over several other Division one offers.
In 2020, he started three games at wide receiver for the Trojans in the COVID shortened season and tallied 21 receptions for 236 yards and two touchdowns as a redshirt freshman.
He was suspended just weeks before the 2021 season after being arrested for a domestic violence case. His suspension lasted the season and by the time the suspension was lifted by USC, McCoy had already entered the transfer portal and elected to play at Tennessee. In 2022, he started all 12 games for the Vols and finished second on the team to Jalin Hyatt in catches with 52 and yards with 667.
In 2023, McCoy played just five games due to a dislocation of his right ankle. In his limited snaps, McCoy hauled in 17 receptions for 217 yards and a touchdown before his season-ending surgery. He has chosen to return to Tennessee for the 2024 season.
