Hartle attended Reagan High School in North Carolina. He had a great high school career, lettering 4 times, earning 2 All-State selections, and leading Reagan High School to a North Carolina 4A State Championship. He was ranked the 25th overall prospect, 2nd North Carolina Prospect, and 1st LHP prospect in the state by Perfect game. Hartle joined Wake Forest following his impressive high school career.
As a freshman, Hartle made 14 appearances, all starts. He managed a 5.30 ERA with 54 strikeouts and 24 walks in 69.2 innings of work. His opposing batting average was .279.
Last season as a sophomore, Hartle improved as expected. He made 18 appearances with 17 starts, holding a 2.81 ERA with an impressive 140 strikeouts to 24 walks in 102.1 innings. He was named First Team All-ACC, and was a First Team All-American via NCBWA and Baseball America.
This year is Hartle's junior year, and he looks to keep up his performance from last season and solidify himself as one of the top pitchers in this class.
