Prather attended Northwest High School in Germantown, Maryland and in 2019, broke out during his junior season, hauling in 844 yards receiving. He was named to the 2019 Washington Post First Team All-Met selection and was a four-star recruit.
He decided to commit to play college football for the West Virginia Mountaineers and played 12 games as a freshman catching 12 passes for 175 yards. During his sophomore season Prather became a larger part of the offense. He hauled in 52 passes for 501 yards and three touchdowns.
After the 2022 season, Prather decided to enter the transfer portal and decided to transfer to Maryland. In his first year at Maryland, Prather caught 42 passes for a career high 666 yards and five touchdowns.
