Travis Hunter is a native of West Palm Beach, Florida, then moved to Georgia as an eight grader. He attended Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia. As a sophomore, he led the county with seven interceptions while recording 919 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a junior, Hunter picked off eight passes and collected 51 tackles in addition to snaring 137 passes for 1,746 yards and 24 touchdowns, earning MaxPreps Georgia Player of the Year honors. As a senior, Hunter recorded 76 receptions for 1,128 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense and 23 tackles, four interceptions, and a forced fumble on defense, even after missing five games to a mid-season ankle injury.
Hunter was considered a five-star prospect and the number one overall recruit by both 247Sports.com and Rivals.com. He originally committed to play football at Florida State, but eventually flipped is commitment to Jackson State after meeting with Florida State alum, Deion Sanders. Hunter became the first five-star recruit to every sign with an HBCU or FCS school.
Hunter missed five games at Jackson State due to an ankle injury in 2022. He finished the season with 18 receptions for 188 yards and four touchdowns. On defense, he collected 19 tackles and had two interceptions. In 2023, Hunter followed head coach Deion Sanders to Colorado to play football for the Buffaloes.
In 2023 for Colorado, Hunter started nine games after missing three games in mid-season with an injury. He made his mark of both sides of the ball, hauling in 57 passes for 721 yards and five touchdowns while totaling 30 tackles and three interceptions on defense. He was named a consensus All-American and second-team All-PAC-12. Hunter was named the recipient of the Paul Hornung Award. He totaled 1,102 snaps including 475 on offense, 631 on defense and 32 on special teams, averaging 114.7 per game.
