Hess attended Charleston High School in Illinois. He helped Charleston to a 24-12-1 record and a Regional Championship in 2019, going 6-3 with a 2.98 ERA across his 47.0 innings of work, striking out 84 batters and walking 24. He was listed as the the No. 1 right-handed pitcher in Illinois and the state's second-ranked prospect by Perfect Game USA. He chose to join Alabama following his high school career.
As a freshman, Hess pitched both as a starter and out of the bullpen. He made 11 appearances including 8 starts. He held a 4.54 ERA with 50 strikeouts and 19 walks in 33.2 innings of work.
As a sophomore, Hess made 7 appearances, all starts. He improved to a 3.22 ERA with 49 strikeouts and just 8 walks over 36.1 innings. He was sidelined for the remainder of the season after these 7 starts.
This year is Hess' junior year. He looks to remain healthy and pick up where he left off as a sophomore. If he does this, he will have fringe first round potential.
