Hurd attended Mira Costa High School in California. He was ranked the nations 9th best pitcher, and the number 1 pitcher in the state of California by Perfect Game. He chose to join UCLA following his high school career.
As a freshman at UCLA, Hurd pitched both as a starter and out of the bullpen. He had 9 appearances including 6 starts, finishing the year with an impressive 1.06 ERA, and an opposing batting average of.138. He collected 48 strikeouts and just 10 walks in 34.0 innings of work.
Hurd chose to transfer to LSU before his sophomore season last year. In his first season with the Tigers, Hurd made 23 appearances including 11 starts. He wound up with a 5.68 ERA, striking out 84 batters and walking 40 over 63.1 innings. He became more comfortable towards the end of the season and was credited with the win in the 2023 national title game.
This season as junior, Hurd aims to lower his ERA from last season and continue where he left off late last year.
